The History Of Cashmere

The History Of Cashmere

One of the most precious & luxurious of fabrics, cashmere has a deep & rich origin.

The fabric dates back to thousands of years ago, where cashmere manufacturing originated in Mongolia. Today, Mongolia remains the largest producer in raw cashmere, followed by Afghanistan, Iran & Turkey.

In the 18th & early 19th centuries, cashmere shawl production thrived. As demand soared in Britain & France, production was thus exported from Asia to the West. Arriving first in Paris, cashmere was seen as a status symbol, & quickly became highly sort after by the wealthy. Expensive in nature, it was adored and favourited amongst upper-class women. 'Kashmir' was soon termed 'cashmere' by the British.

Coming from the fleece of cashmere goats, pure cashmere can be dyed and spun into yarns, as well as being woven into other fabrics for everyday clothing. Shawls, sweaters, jackets, blankets & other accessories can be assembled from this wonderful fabric. It takes a single goat one year to produce enough cashmere for a scarf, conveying its value both in quality & luxury.

One can detect good quality cashmere by looking at its composition. Good quality cashmere is free from synthetic blends, & constructed with pure fibres or wool blends only. The Caroline Poncho is made from a blend of 70% wool & 30% cashmere.

At K Luxé, we pride ourselves on using good quality fabrics to ensure your staples stand the test of time. We believe it is such a delight to acknowledge & witness your garments being passed down to future generations.
