Jane Birkin inspired the most coveted bag in history: The Birkin.
As famously recalled, the story began as Jane's upgraded flight found her seated next to the man himself, Jean-Louis Dumas, who served as the chairman for Hermès from 1978-2006.
He watched as Jane's belongings dropped from her bag to the ground. He told her, "You should have one with pockets", where she responded, "the day Hermès makes one with pockets, I'll have that." Introducing himself as the company's artistic director, the divine interaction resulted in Jane sketching a prototype on a sick bag.
Bigger than the Kelly, yet smaller than a suitcase, the Birkin was birthed. Paying homage to Jane, Jean-Louis named the creation after her, where its profound origins make the bag ever the more special.
Not only did she effortlessly inspire one of the most influential designers to create the Hermès Birkin, her relaxed yet elegant style is one we can draw inspiration from this summer.
